My opinion the US-Canadian Magazine Dispute was strongly motivated by genuine desire of the Canadians’ to protect their culture. According to the Canadian government the “production of magazines” has always been viewed as “as an important touchstone of Canadian National Identity.” Furthermore, the worry that the people over there ware quickly becoming sucked in and magnetized by the socio-culture of the States. For those reasons the Canadian government attempted to do something to save their culture that was influenced by the magazine business.

The issue grew when it also when the Canadian magazine businesses get affected financially. In the 20s’ the government imposed protective tariffs on foreign magazine. When the government was not able to negotiate with the neighboring country, it introduced additional taxes on the foreign production of magazines and advertising revenues in 1995. I am however sure whether that was actually good for the country and magazine businesses or not, as today “89 percent of magazine sold in Canada are still foreign.” Also the foreign magazines that were not part of the 89 percent they used split-run magazines, which was another reason why the government was so

determined to take action against the foreign magazines. The use of split-run magazines were the reason why in 1965 the Canadian government prohibited the importation of split-run editions of foreign-published magazines into their country.

The extent that the Canada went through shows how much they were willing to go to protect not only their magazine market, but also their culture from being taken over from the foreign industries. Sadly, today only 11 percent of the entire magazine market come from Canadian magazine sales. The entire process of the US-Canadian Magazine Dispute, proves how important this matter is for the Canadians and I do not blame them for trying to protect their own culture.

Even though I am not a Canadian citizen, but if I was in the position that had to choose whether to protect my country culture, I would do all that is in my power.

In my opinion the Canadians should be allowed to “vote” with their purchasing habits. The reason why I think that is because that way the Canadian magazine business owners can see what exactly their clients purchasing habits are, so that they could change their local magazine product that will make the Canadian citizen to want to purchase that product more. I think that way the magazine market would understand why Canadian magazines constitute only 11 percent magazine sales. Furthermore the people would be happy with the content they will be purchasing. For issue regarding whether it’s fair or not to levy extra taxes against foreign magazines, I think that it all depends on couple of things. First of all, Canada and other countries have already entered different trade agreements, which means by levying extra taxes against foreign magazines the country would go against the agreement. That could potentially create extra problems for the government. On the other hand however, I do think that countries should be allowed to give sanctions against foreign magazines so that they could protect their culture.
