Question: How is the principle of federalism connected to the idea of limited government?

Answer: In limited government, the government is restricted in what it can and cannot do. In federalism, the federal government has limits because it has certain powers the state doesn’t and vice versa.

Question: What events led to the 26th Amendment and what rights did it guarantee?

Answer: The Vietnam War led to the 26th Amendment because people felt if the kids were old enough to fight in the war, they should also be old enough to vote. It guarantees anyone over the age of 18 can vote.

Question: What advantages did the Framers see in creating a bicameral legislature rather than one with a single legislative body?

Answer: They felt it would help keep no one house from having too much power. The British Parliament used it and it also helped to form the compromise between the New Jersey Plan and Virginia Plan.

Question: How did the Framers ensure that the government of the United States could adapt over time to meet the needs of the people?

Answer: The Framers worded the Constitution so that some laws are defined but others are open for interpretation.They do this (adapting) by making amendments.

Question: What is the difference between an expressed power and an inherent power?

Answer: An expressed power is written out specifically in the Constitution, but inherent powers are those given to the National Government because it is in a sovereign state which means the people have a say. The inherent powers are not stated directly in the Constitution.

Answer: The executive branch can check on the legislative branch by vetoing legislation and calling special sessions of congress.

Question: What is the principle of judicial review? Which branch carries out judicial review?

Answer: The principle of judicial review is that the judicial branch can look at both the executive and legislative branches and rule against things that they do that go against the constitution.

Question: List several examples of concurrent powers.

Answer: borrowing money, build an infrastructure, enforce laws, form courts, secure the population, collect taxes and make laws

Question: List the check that the legislative branch has on BOTH the executive and judicial branches

Answer: impeach the president or judges.

Question: What was the purpose of the Supremacy Clause?

Answer: It ensures the the Constitution is above all other forms of law and treaties and acts of Congress are just below that. Supreme Court is in charge.
