NTTP 3-22.3 MV22 Chapter 3

Conversion Point (CvP)

A designated point relative to the intended landing area where the conversion is initiated and should be deliberately chosen based upon factors such as gross weight, ground speed, and altitude.

Conversion Point (CvP) Management

CvP +- 0.1NM for every 10 KGS from 220KGS

6 Basic Tactical Approaches

1. Straight-In
2. 90-degree offset
3. 180-degree offset
4. Hasty
5. Medium-Altitude Tactical Approach (MATA)
6. Approach to Hover (APPR)

Time from CvP to Wheels on Deck

1+45 to 2+15 minutes

Straight-In Tactical Approach

Ingress heading within +- 45 degrees of landing heading
CvP = 3NM
Results in least time spent in most vulnerable phase of execution
Most Desired Approach

90-degree offset Tactical Approach

Ingress heading is 90 +- 45 degrees of landing heading
CvP = 2.0NM
Results in slight increase in time required in the objective area and aircrew workload
Allows better visual reconnaissance
Requires more deceleration
Allows Wingman to use Radius of Turn

180-degree offset Tactical Approach

Ingress heading is 180 +- 45 degrees of landing heading
CvP = 1.5NM
Results in moderate increase in time required in the objective area and aircrew workload

Hasty Approach

Exact location of LZ in unknown
Two Types: Downwind and Teardrop
Turn 3 seconds after overflying LZ

Medium Altitude Tactical Approach

Maximizes speed, altitude, and IR reduction capability for Threat reaction.
Descent Airspeed based on METT-TSL
~2 mins spent in descent.
2 Types: Straight-In and Spiral

Types of Descents

Standard Descent

Enroute Airspeed 2000fpm

Tactical Descent

Maximum Descent

20%Qm 260KCAS ~6500fpm

MATA Straight-In

Starts at 13000MSL 240KGS 15NM from LZ
At approximately 6000MSL 260-270KGS 9NM from LZ
Level at 300A 270KGS 5NM from LZ

Sequenced Approach

Utilizes timing separation to sequence individual aircraft or maneuver elements into and out of the objective area..
Executed NLT the IP
2 Minute separation is standard

Staggered Approach

Designed to create separation of aircraft due to operational restraints while keeping aircraft in sight.
Used when LZ environment is uncertain.
