Answer: The significance of books Tom’s reference is he likes to learn about the class system. This topic is relevant since 1920 is where racism is taking place and many had different type of classes. Tom reads “ deep books with long words in them”(13). The genre of the book is scientific.

Question: How would you describe Daisy’s state of mind during dinner? What does she say and do that helps reveal her inner conflicts? What do we learn about her relationship with Tom?

Answer: Daisy feels “cynical” (13) during dinner. She is upset since she found Tom sleeping with someone else. She excuses herself from the table in an unkind manner, she “threw her napkin on the table and excused herself and went into the house”(14). This says she is very upset with what had happened with Tom.

Question: Why does Daisy describe her childhood as a “white girlhood”? Why does Daisy hope that her daughter grows up to be a beautiful little fool? What do these comments show about her view of her life and her marriage?

Answer: When Daisy was a child she grew up as a white girl. She was thought beauty is a necessity and appearance always mattered.

Question: When Nick leaves the Buchanans’ house, he is “confused and a little disgusted.” Why? What does this statement suggest about his values in contrast to the Buchanans?

Answer: When Nick leaves the Buchanans house he is “confused and a little disgusted” because he disagrees with Daisy. This statement states Nick views differently from the Buchanans.

Question: What is Gatsby doing when Nick sees him at the end of the chapter? Even though we don’t meet Gatsby in this chapter, we do hear about him through others. What information do we learn about him and his reputation?

Answer: When Nick saw Gatsby, Gatsby was standing with his hands in his pockets regrading the silver pepper of the stars”(20). Mr.Gatsby is rich and famous although he keeps a very low profile.
